Michael Mazzuca

Michael is a litigation, business, and construction infrastructure lawyer.

Michael has been involved in a broad range of complex litigation matters, business and finance transactions, and international work.  His law practice includes construction and construction lien litigation, employment and labour law, corporate and commercial law, and civil litigation.

Michael is tireless and dedicated advocate for his clients.  He approaches each case strategically and crafts litigation and resolutions innovatively.  His colleagues and opponents know him as a person that “hates to lose.”  He has been lead counsel on some of Canada’s leading precedent cases.  He has conducted many motions, injunctions, trials, and appeals before various courts and tribunals in Ontario including the Court of Appeal, Divisional Court, Superior Court of Justice, Human Rights Tribunal, and the Ontario Labour Relations Board, as well as private arbitrations.

Michael negotiates and litigates all forms of construction contracts including CCDC forms, EPC Contracts, Construction Service, General Contracting, and Management Project Agreements.  He is versed on all aspects of the Construction Act and construction lien litigation and various bond claims and remedies.  Michael acts on construction matters related to bankruptcy and insolvency matters.

Michael has developed an extensive renewable energy practice.  He has been legal counsel to some of the pioneer companies in the renewable energy sector.  He has negotiated various energy and power purchase agreements involving ground mount and rooftop solar, micro-grid energy, wind, storage energy, and biomass.   He has negotiated energy agreements involving various countries including the United Kingdom, Caribbean countries, South America, Europe, and the United States.  He is lead counsel for Canada’s first large scale energy storage project.

Prior to starting Rousseau Mazzuca LLP, Michael was a lawyer at a large national firm.  He is often called upon as a commentator by various major media outlets.  He is a teacher and lecturer of law courses at the university level. He has been an author and contributor to construction and employment law texts and books.

Michael was Valedictorian of his university class and Academic All Canadian.  He received the Lieutenant Governor Silver Medal for attaining the highest GPA.  He holds a Masters of Law Degree (Osgoode Hall Law School), Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (College of Law, Sydney), Bachelor of Laws (Melbourne Law School), Certificate of Canadian Qualification (NCA, University of Toronto Law School). 

Michael played hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (London Knights, Kitchener Rangers) and received a NHL invitation tryout (Nashville Predators).  He played hockey for the University of New Brunswick and the Australian Ice Hockey League (Melbourne Ice, captain). He remains very active in the sporting community advocating for players’ rights and advises and litigates cases in the areas of sport violence, harassment and discrimination, and sport administration.

Other than law, Michael enjoys the real estate sector.  He continues to play sports and enjoys traveling and spending time with his family, including his two boys.
